Two things are necessary in order to establish an internet presence: a web page and a host for your page so that it is available for viewing 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The file(s) for your website are actually uploaded to the host computer (server) and stored there.

Very often, the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that gets you your E-mail and connects you to the world wide web (WWW) allows members a certain amount of web space for free. Generally, they have a "click 'n build" mechanism whereby you can build the page yourself without having any knowledge of hyper-text markup language (HTML). Your ISP would also host the page for you. The internet address of your page would look something like this:  http://www.myISP.com/members/mypage.
 

On the other hand, if you have an enterprise that you would like to have it's own unique identity, then you'd have to create your own domain. Your web address would then be "http://www.myname.com".

A domain can be as simple as 1 page or as complex as many pages with fill-in forms, shopping carts, etc.. The name has to be registered but usually the hosting company takes care of registering the domain name for you.
